A True Statesmen

Where have all the statesmen gone?

It seems that true leadership from both the democratic and republican parties in congress have been quashed by the executive. Unfortunately, we must look elsewhere for the portrait of a true statesman. Daniel Hannan of the British Parliament gave a rousing speech just yesterday on the state of the United Kingdom.

His words ring true here; just replace Gordon Brown and United Kingdom, with Barack Obama and the United States.

very good speech and generally agree, although:
"replace Gordon Brown and United Kingdom, with Barack Obama and the United States."
could just as easily be Bush...

I agree that Bushes legacy should be tainted by irresponsible spending. However, we are talking about two totally different beasts when comparing Obama to Bush.

If we want to talk about degrees of bad... Heritage has done an excellent job of summing it up

The most important statistic IMO

In eight years of office, President Bush presided over a $2.5 trillion increase in the public debt.

In 3 months in office, President Obama’s budget would add $4.9 trillion in public debt from the beginning of 2010 through 2016.

Would you say that double is in two different ball parks? Keep in mind also that Obama has not yet had to deal with natural disasters, such as Katrina, or "man caused disasters" which yielded commitments in two wars abroad.
